I used to have tons of the old-fashioned single hollyhocks, which I adore for so many reasons, but they gradually died out, infected with that nasty rust disease. Oddly enough, they then started sprouting up in the gravel driveway, where they seem to thrive. They still get rust (no matter what) but they do survive and self-seed. Today, this one started to open its buds. I guess summer is officially here.
